He established four new franchises including the first U.S. professional sports team in Mexico and aligned every NBA team with a G League affiliate. Professor Graeme Close is Professor of Human Physiology and Head of the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University. A former professional Rugby League player, he has published over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers, with a sustained research focus on micronutrition, muscle physiology, and athlete health, including extensive work on vitamin D and its role in muscle function, recovery, and performance. He is a Fellow of both the European College of Sport Sciences and the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences.
Graeme works at the interface of laboratory science and elite sport, with a strong emphasis on translating research into applied performance strategies. He currently serves as a High Performance Consultant to England Rugby and was part of the performance team for the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour. He is also Head of Performance Nutrition for the DP World Tour, supporting multiple Ryder Cup campaigns, and has extensive experience across professional football, including work with clubs such as Everton FC, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest. Josh Corbeil is Senior Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance and Head Athletic Trainer for the Indiana Pacers. He joined the Indiana Pacers as the Physical Therapist/Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2004. He was promoted to the Senior Director of Medical Operations/Head Athletic Trainer for the Pacers in 2005 and then to Senior VP of Sports Medicine and Performance/ Head Athletic Trainer in 2024. Corbeil graduated from Boston University in 2000 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in health studies and 2002 with a Master’s in physical therapy. Corbeil then gained his athletic training certification as an intern with the Boston Celtics for three seasons, while working as a physical therapist at Pro Sports Therapy in Waltham, Massachusetts. He earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2010 from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. In addition to being a licensed physical therapist and licensed athletic trainer, Corbeil is also a certified member of the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as a performance enhancement specialist and a corrective exercise specialist. He is also a Certified Myofascial Trigger Point Therapist (CMTPT).
Corbeil was honored with the Joe O’Toole NBA Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2011. He was also a member of the first recipients of the Joe O’Toole/David Craig Athletic Training Staff of the Year award in 2019. He served 3 years as the Eastern Conference Representative on the NBATA Executive Committee. He then served 2 years as the Chairperson and is currently serving as Immediate Past Chairperson.

Dr. Côté is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University in Canada, where he served as the Director from 2006 to 2019. Dr. Côté holds a cross-appointment as a visiting professor in the School of Human Movement Studies at the University of Queensland in Australia. His research interests include sport expertise, children in sport, coaching, and positive youth development. His most recent research involves exploring the concept of ‘interest’ as a key factor in development and engagement in youth sport and using observation techniques to evaluate the impact of Transformational Coaching on athletes’ growth. He is a Fellow of the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP) and the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology (SCAPPS). Dr. John DiFiori has served as the Director of Sports Medicine for the NBA since 2014, where he helps lead the League’s research initiatives, and the development and implementation of policies and standards related to player health and safety. He also serves on the FIBA Medical Commission where he works with basketball federations across the world in setting standards for player health.
Dr. DiFiori previously served as Chief of the Primary Sports Medicine Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery, where he directed one of the largest academic and clinical programs in the US.
Prior to HSS, Dr. DiFiori was Chief of the UCLA Division of Sports Medicine and Non-Operative Orthopedics. He was Head Team Physician for the UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, overseeing the care of more than 650 athletes in 24 NCAA sports. He spent more than 20 years on the sidelines with the Bruins football and basketball teams.
He is a former President of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and is a fellow of both the AMSSM and the American College of Sports Medicine.
Dr. DiFiori’s primary research has focused on youth sports injuries and sport specialization. He is a co-author for several recently published scientific articles in the areas of youth and professional basketball, including leading the publications of the NBA Youth Basketball Guidelines, and the AMSSM Position Statement on Overuse Injuries and Burnout in Youth Sports. In addition, he has authored multiple publications centered on sport injury epidemiology and sport-related concussion.

Dr. Fong is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. In this position, Patrick is responsible for the full spectrum of care for athletes from initial evaluation and ongoing treatment to injury prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Patrick has a keen interest in the structure and function of the foot and the role a strong foundation plays in movement, health and performance. He is also interested in the footwear athletes wear both during basketball as well as training or daily life and how footwear affects the expression of foot function and strength and how those relate to proprioception, balance and biomechanics up the chain.

Dr. Gary Green is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine and is a Clinical Professor in the UCLA Division of Sports Medicine. Dr. Green has been affiliated with Major League Baseball since 2003 and has served as Medical Director for Major League Baseball since 2010. He is also currently Research Director for the MLB. In these roles, he has been instrumental in several rule changes to Major League Baseball that have improved the health and safety of players.
He has been a team physician for collegiate athletes for the past 38 years and has served as head team physician for Pepperdine University since 1997. Dr. Green combines primary care and sports medicine in his clinical practice at the Medical Doctors of St. John’s up until January 2025 Pacific Palisades, CA and feels that all patients are athletes. His practice is now located in Santa Monica, CA.

Charles Lee recently concluded his second season at the helm of the Charlotte Hornets after being hired as the 12th head coach in franchise history on May 9, 2024. He holds 12 years of NBA coaching experience and joined the Hornets after winning the 2023-24 NBA championship with the Boston Celtics. Lee held assistant coaching positions with the Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks (winning an NBA championship in 2021) and the Atlanta Hawks prior to joining Charlotte.
In his second season, Lee helped guide the franchise to a 44-win season. The 25-win improvement from the previous season is the largest year-over-year improvement in franchise history. Under his leadership, the Hornets underwent a sharp turnaround that started in January and culminated in the franchise’s first postseason victory since 2016. After the turn of the new year, the Hornets boasted the best net rating in the NBA on the backs of the league’s No. 1 offense and top 5 defense. Lee earned Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honors for the month of January 2026.
Lee began his coaching career at his alma mater, Bucknell University, where he was an assistant for two seasons (2012-2014). He played four seasons (2002-2006) with the Bison, leading the team to two Patriot League titles and the only two NCAA Tournament victories in school history, including a win over No. 3 Kansas as a No. 14 seed in 2005. A native of the Washington, D.C., area, Lee and his wife, Lindsey, have three daughters, Corinne, Vivian and Josephine.

Dr. George Muschler is Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the Cleveland Clinic, where he served on faculty and in clinical practice from 1988 to 2025. A clinician scientist, his surgical practice focused on musculoskeletal oncology, fracture repair and bone regeneration, joint preservation, and primary and revision hip and knee replacement. He completed fellowship training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
Dr. Muschler founded and directed the Cleveland Clinic Regenerative Medicine Laboratory, which earned continuous federal funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense for more than three decades. His research has focused on human stem and progenitor cell biology, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, with recent work centered on advanced image analysis and precision automation to enable safe and effective clinical cell therapies.
He held numerous leadership roles at Cleveland Clinic, including Vice Chair of Bioengineering, Director of the Orthopaedic Research Center, Vice Chair of the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute, and Director of the Cleveland Clinic Joint Preservation Center.
Dr. Muschler led major multi institutional translational initiatives, including the Ohio based Clinical Tissue Engineering Center and co founding the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine, dedicated to accelerating therapies for wounded service members. Dr. Ramsey Nijem is a strength and conditioning coach, educator, and performance specialist with over 15 years of experience working at the highest levels of sport. He began his professional career in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings, where he served as both an assistant and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, becoming the youngest Head S&C Coach in league history.
After completing his doctorate in Human and Sport Performance, Ramsey transitioned to collegiate athletics as the Director of Sport Performance for the University of Kansas Men’s Basketball team, where he helped the program win the 2022 NCAA National Championship.
Today, Ramsey is the founder of Applied Performance, an education platform dedicated to helping strength coaches, physical therapists, and sports performance professionals gain clarity and confidence in applying performance science. Dan O’Brien is Director of Sports Medicine and Research at the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), where he drives initiatives focused on player health, wellness, and performance for NBPA members. In this role, he helps represent players’ interests in league-wide medical policies and protocols, while also working closely with NBPA staff to educate and support players on health, medical, and performance-related matters. He also helps oversee medical and performance strategy for New York and LA Facilities and for key events, including the NBA Combine, Top 100 Camp, and The Sanctuary.
Alongside his work at the NBPA, Dan is pursuing a PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison through the Badger Athletic Performance Lab. His research focuses on patellar tendinopathy, using imaging and biomechanical testing to better understand tendon structure and knee function.

Dermot Phelan, MB, BAO, BCh, PhD, FASE, FACC is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the Gragg Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine. He serves as Medical Director of Cardiovascular Imaging and Director of both the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) Center and the Gragg Center for Cardiovascular Performance at Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Trained in cardiology in Ireland, Dr. Phelan completed advanced cardiac imaging fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic, where he went on to establish and lead the institution’s first Sports Cardiology Center. His work focuses on distinguishing healthy athletic adaptation from heart disease, using advanced imaging to improve athlete safety and performance.
A recognized leader in sports cardiology, Dr. Phelan serves as a cardiology consultant for the NFL and MLB Scouting Combines, is Chair of the NFL Cardiovascular Task Force, and has been a member of the NBA Cardiovascular Advisory Committee since 2015. His team oversees cardiac imaging quality for the NBA, WNBA, and G League, reviewing more than 1,000 studies annually.
He has helped shape national guidelines for evaluating competitive athletes and is editor of Care of the Athletic Heart: From the Clinic to the Sidelines.

Lionel Rice is the Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Utah Jazz. Originally from the Bronx, NY, Rice first joined the Jazz in 2023, where his primary responsibilities include assisting with daily treatment, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance recovery of the Utah Jazz roster athletes. He also serves as a representative on the NBATA Executive Committee and Foundation Boards. In addition, he serves on the NATA Scholarship Committee where he helps review candidates who are looking to be future athletic trainers and make positive impacts early.
Before joining the Jazz, he worked for two years at Michigan State University with the Spartan football team. Rice received his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from King’s College in 2015, Master of Science in Athletic Training from California University of Pennsylvania in 2016, and Doctorate of Athletic Training from A.T. Still University. Rice worked in the NFL as a seasonal intern with the Minnesota Vikings in 2016-17 and the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018-19 seasons. In between those two stints, he completed an internship at Bethune Cookman University working primarily with the Football and Track/Field teams in 2017-18 season. Before arriving at Michigan State University, he worked with University of Texas-San Antonio football team from 2019-21.

Dr. Allan Schwartz is a distinguished academic cardiologist and long‑standing leader in cardiovascular medicine. He graduated magna cum laude in physics and mathematics from the City College of New York in 1967, earned a master’s degree in physics from Harvard University in 1968, and received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1974, where he was awarded the Robert Loeb and Janeway Prizes. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Presbyterian Hospital and a fellowship in clinical and research cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Schwartz returned to Columbia in 1978 as an academic clinical cardiologist and assumed progressively senior leadership roles, including Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Associate Director of the Division of Cardiology, and Seymour Milstein and Harold Ames Hatch Professor of Cardiology. In 1999, he was appointed Chief of the Division of Cardiology and later served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine.
As Cath Lab Director, Dr. Schwartz helped pioneer intracoronary radiation for restenosis and led early structural heart investigations involving the mitral valve. As Division Chief, he established one of the earliest structural interventional cardiology programs in the United States at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork‑Presbyterian, which became an international leader in transcatheter aortic valve replacement. His current research focuses on valvular heart disease, including serving as national co principal investigator of the Early TAVR trial.
Dr. Schwartz has also led landmark studies on cardiac remodeling in NBA athletes, advancing athlete cardiovascular safety. Under his leadership, Columbia’s cardiology programs expanded significantly, achieving international prominence in clinical care, research, and training.

Dr. Ankit Shah is Founder and President of Sports & Performance Cardiology in Chevy Chase, MD. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, team cardiologist for USA Swimming and the Washington Wizards/Mystics, Cardiology Consultant for the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and serves on the National Basketball Association Cardiac Advisory Committee. Dr. Sims is in his second season with the Los Angeles Lakers as Director, Player Performance and Health. In his role, he leads the team’s integrated performance and medical services, spanning athletic training, strength and conditioning, physical therapy, massage therapy, nutrition, and sports science. In partnership with the team’s orthopedic surgeon, primary care sports medicine physician, and director of mental health and wellness, he ensures players receive world-class care on and off the court, and optimizes health, recovery, and performance throughout the season.
Dr. Sims most recently served as Senior Vice President, Head of Medical Operations at the NBA where he developed and implemented innovative health and safety protocols, investigated medical technologies to optimize basketball experiences, and conducted medical risk assessments. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine and was a key member of the medical operations team for the NBA Bubble in 2020. Dr. Sims served as team physician for USA Track and Field at the 2016 Olympics and provided direct medical support to USA Basketball at the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. From 2011-14, he served as the medical director and team physician for the Golden State Warriors.
The Chicago native earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biological Sciences from Stanford University, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, where he went on to complete a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine. She spent the last decade working in men’s professional sports with MLS and NBA teams, including New York City FC, the Brooklyn Nets and the Sacramento Kings. Erik Wikstrom is a Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At UNC, Dr. Wikstrom serves as the Director of the Human Movement Science PhD program and is a member of both the Motion Science Institute and the Sports Medicine Institute. Dr. Wikstrom graduated with his B.S. in Athletic Training from Roanoke College in 2001. He completed his Masters in Exercise Science and his Doctorate in Health & Human Performance, both with specializations in Athletic Training, from the University of Florida in 2003 and 2007, respectively. Additionally, Dr. Wikstrom has worked as a Scholar with Amazon, Inc. and continues to serve on the Ankle Sprain Initiative working groups within the National Basketball Association.
Dr. Wikstrom’s primary research interest is on the impact of musculoskeletal injury on sensorimotor control of the lower extremity with particular emphasis on the coordination of balance following ankle joint injury. His current research focuses on evaluating how ankle joint injury alters sensorimotor function, developing interventions to restore post-injury impairments, and understanding mechanisms that could slow the progression from ankle joint injury to ankle osteoarthritis. Dr. Wikstrom’s research has been funded by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Research and Education Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Defense among others. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM) and the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (FNATA).
